DRAFT E-mail Letter for your use:

To Whom It May Concern,

The Faroe Islands are beautiful, and your people are reported as living in the modern world while respecting their ancient, island past. That is highly commendable in the world we live in.

However, your tradition of the “Grindadráp” is a black mark on your islands. Your shoreline is truly a magnificent landscape, except when it turns red with blood.

The impact this has on tourism must be crucial to your economy, as I wouldn’t recommend anyone visit your lovely island. The tainted landscape is reticent of the Grindadráp, but, this is no secret to the rest of the world.

Whales are sensitive, social animals with highly developed nervous systems. They have a profound ability to suffer distress, terror and pain. Each year, when the Faroese kill pilot whales and other small cetaceans, you also destroy our oceans.

Up to 5,000 Faroese (1/6) have either suffered or died from the effects of the high mercury levels, along with high numbers of mentally retarded children. In 1996, findings indicated a reduction of neuropsychological abilities in Faroese children due to mercury exposure (Weihe et al. 1996).

Compassion is what I would expect when hearing of the comradery shared among your countrymen. Yet, the Grindadráp continues unabated, poisoning your own people. They are viewed as a “free” food source instead of the catastrophic toxic poison to the Faroese that they are.

Don’t the Faroese people have a right to know what they are consuming, and how it is affecting them? What are the guidelines for those not pregnant and consuming these toxins? Do you take into consideration the Faroese Health Authorities conclude that only the complete “cessation of whale consumption is the only legitimate advice“.

Your splendid landscape will never be seen by a multitude of people, because of the outrage over the Grindadráp. Organizations are calling for a blanket boycott of the Faroe Islands and Faroese products. Your economy will suffer from these boycotts until the whale hunt ends.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
