Please Urge Derbyshire County Council to Reject Application for Pig ‘Prison’

Dear Friend,

Take Action Today

As most of you now know, in March 2010, Midland Pig Producers (MPP) submitted an application (9/2010/0311) to build a factory farm in Foston that would imprison up to 25,000 pigs at any one time. That application was withdrawn but was later resubmitted to Derbyshire County Council under planning ref CW9/0311/174. According to the plans, 2,500 breeding sows would be kept in a rearing unit, and the facility would produce 1,000 pigs a week to be transported to slaughter. Pigs, like all farmed animals, are sentient beings, not commodities to be produced. Pigs are complex, highly intelligent animals who are naturally at home foraging widely in woodlands. Forcing them to live in factory-farm conditions causes them immense suffering. Mothers would be denied the opportunity to bond with and properly nurse their young, and the pigs will spend their entire lives indoors, unable to roam as they would in the wild.

Confining so many pigs to one location will guarantee even greater levels of disease, infection and injury than already exist on standard farms. Intensive farming also contributes to the spread of disease, including swine flu, to the human population.

On 1 November, South Derbyshire District Council (a consultee to the planning decision) will be meeting to discuss this application. Whilst the final decision date remains unconfirmed, this meeting suggests that things may be coming to a conclusion.

It’s crucial that we show the county council the strength of public feeling against this proposal. Please take a moment to send a letter to the Derbyshire County Council telling them why you object to the plans, and encourage family and friends to do the same. Pigs urgently need your help!

Please take action now using our online form and urge Derbyshire County Council to reject any plans to build this pig prison.

Sincerely,

PETA

JUSTICE FOR VERA

Vera

Why this is Important

On July 26, 2011, Veronica Garcia brutally attacked a dog named Vera by slicing off her ear with a butcher knife and brutally beating the dog with brass knuckles, which is a deadly weapon .  All over doing what is natural for most dogs to do.  Going after small game, Garcia’s “pet” rooster.  Which roosters are against city ordinances to keep in the City of Detroit.

This brutal attack occurred while Vera sat and waited to be let into her home.  She was not in Garcia’s yard at the time, nor was she attacking the rooster.  In fact we do not know if Vera was the dog that attacked the rooster at all.  However, Veronica Garcia had no trouble tracking down a dog to beat while young children watched in horror over her rooster being attacked in her yard.

We want Veronica Garcia to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

ECEAE celebrates 125,000 signatures for No Cruel Cosmetics petition!

SOURCE: ECEAE

About the Campaign

On 11th March 2009, all animal testing of cosmetics in the EU stopped thanks largely to two decades of campaigning by the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE).But there is a catch. A ‘marketing’ ban that would also prevent the sale of new cruelly tested cosmetics in the EU is now in jeopardy. This marketing ban allows three types of animal tests to be carried out in non-EU countries for cosmetics sold in Europe until March 2013. The reason is to allow non-animal tests (‘alternatives’) to be developed and approved. Now some in the cosmetics industry want to delay the March 2013 deadline even longer. If they get their way it could mean 10 more years during which thousands of rabbits, guinea pigs, mice and rats could be injected, gassed or force-fed and killed worldwide for cosmetics products sold in the EU.The ECEAE is fighting to ensure this does not happen. And we need your help.

We’re delighted that over 125,000 people have signed the No Cruel Cosmetics petition against cruel cosmetics being sold in the EU.

ECEAE members from across Europe are currently meeting in Warsaw to discuss campaign plans, and took the opportunity to mark the fantastic response from concerned European citizens.

We still need many more people to take a stand against cosmetics sold in the EU from being cruelly tested on animals.  Please sign and share our petition at http://www.nocruelcosmetics.org/sign_up.php

Dear Madam/Sir

It has come to my attention, that Deputy Rebecca Garcia has been appointed, by the Brazilian Congress to evaluate the Bill that was introduced, to BAN fur farming of chinchillas in Brazil. This Bill, presented in 2009 By Deputy Tripoli, if approved, will completely BAN the breeding and killing of chinchillas (Chincilla lanigera) in every state of your country.

I am writing this letter to inform you that I, along with many citizens from Brazil, as well as millions of people around the world, expect you to take a stand Against this cruelty. By voting Against this practice and Forbidding it, by means of a federal law, that would make it Illegal for any person or group to maintain such a business, that is unacceptable to the vast majority of decent people worldwide.

At this very moment we are in the process of collecting signatures from people all around the world. Against chinchilla Fur Farming in Brazil:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/brazils-shame-worlds-biggest-chinchilla-killer-for-the-fur-trade/

The Brazilian Constitution, on its article 225, parágrafo 1o, inciso VII,

clearly defines as an attribution of the Brazilian State to expressly Prohibit animal cruelty. Therefore, I believe it is reasonable to demand the BAN on such horrific cruelty, as is done in the breeding and killing of these animals.

They are bred in small filthy cages their entire lives. Only to face a cruel and painful death, all for the sake of profit for a few, on a totally non-essential item such as “fashion”. That goes to a few rich and narrow minded customers. The following footage, made in Michigan, of United States, clearly shows the horrific methods used by breeders, such as (suffocation, breaking their necks or electrocution).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nX_VkgVsUyc

Babies squeal as they are snatched away from their mothers by their tails and brought to a “grower room” where they are confined to a tiny cage. Mothers, try frantically to reach their babies that were just taken away.

Killing via the electrocution method; the farmer pulls a rusty wire apparatus from a drawer, dips the sharp clamps into a jar of water, and attaches one clamp to the chinchilla’s metal ear tag and the other to her foot. He plugs the device into a wall socket and drops the chinchilla to the counter. The surge of electricity causes the chinchilla to stiffen, her tail stuck straight out, her chest heaved, and a minute later, a yellow trickle ran down the counter—as she had lost control of her bladder.

Following this barbaric procedure, the farmer clips the chinchilla’s arms and legs to a pelting board in a spread-eagled position. Slitting her open, he cuts her face away from her skull and cuts her hands off. Working her pelt away from her body, he pulls her arms out of her skin, which turn inside out like socks. Then with a scissors, cuts off her whiskers, her ears, her tail then also the feet; all were dumped, along with her naked, skinned body, into a garbage bucket, like so much trash.

The Brazilian people have asked for our help and support, to put an END to this brutal industry. Which we have every intention of following through until we see that it has Ended.

So I ask, that you please consider your decision carefully. For the decision you make, will affect you directly, via the impact it will have on your personal political career. And also, will bring serious consequences _ either favorable or negative _ to Brazilian tourism, as we will not hesitate to Boycott your country, over all, and the incoming international Events on Brazil soil: Copa do Mundo and Olympic Games.

We already have Brazil targeted for its insane position in relation to the Non-Preservation of the Amazon Forest and its commitment to deny international claims Against Belo Monte. Of which, we have a petition going on that also!

Please do not disappoint us, as we certainly do not wish to be forced to retaliate.

Yours sincerely,

Ban Bullfighting in Mexico-send a mail

Facebook Event by P.E.A.C.E. Pression Ethique Anti-Corrida Europe

As you may know, Mexico has registered bullfight as a national cultural treasure (who gave them the idea ?). But a political party and animals protection associations have initiated an official request to abolish it in Mexico City.

The closing of the Monumental, in this megalopolis, would strongly weaken aficion in the whole country. Moreover, speaking of the biggest arena in the world offering around 500 corridas and novilladas per year, the economical and moral impact on the international mundillo, right after abolition in Catalunya, would be huge.

WE MUST SUPPORT MEXICO NOW ! Write a polite e-mail to the MPs members of the commission in charge of bullfight abolition in Mexico City.

Objet : bullfight in Mexico City

Dear Sirs,

I have been informed about the project initiated recently to abolish bullfight in Mexico City and its district.

I would like to congratulate Mexico for this initiative, sign of a moral, democratical, and cultural progress of the country we should all try to go towards. By sending this message, I declare my complete support to this cause.

As a member of the commission in charge of this project, you must take your responsibility, and bring your country and people to the best. People in charge of the public decisions should never sacrify society needs or population will, to private interests. I respectfully ask you to take the right decision in this matter.

I have no doubt regarding Mexico’s future and awareness, and I hope mexican parliament will proclaim it and offer an example to the whole world.

Sincerely,

Shenzhen: Merchant hangs dogs to death as protest in a relocation dispute

In the morning of October 11th, people in Shenzhen Buji road near Shenhui road were stunned to see two dogs were hung from windows in a building and alongside were banners that said, “If cornered, even a dead dogs will jump off the building (“死狗急也跳楼”, adapted from a Chinese idiom “狗急会跳墙”, literally means that a cornered dog will leap over the wall. The idiom means a man driven to desperation can do anything.) The incident seemed to be another relocation dispute.

“Shenzhen – China. To object against the potential demolition of their building, the management company hung two dogs, which died a horrible death after a few hours. ACTAsia condemned this practice openly on our Chinese blog, and received hundreds of supportive reactions. Another example for the need of animal protection laws and humane education in China.”

Dog cullings China continue

Background: ACTAsia for Animals

Dog culling as a response to human rabies incidences is still common practice throughout China. 56 Chinese cities have conducted large scale dog culling operations at least once in the last five years.

In July 2011 the local government of Jiangmen city, Guangdong pro! vince, issued a ban on all pet dogs in city areas. An estimated 30,000 dogs had to be dropped off at a remote area to be either adopted by rural residents or killed. Only guard dogs would escape that fate.

Concerned dog owners in Jiangmen and animal supporters from all over the country, however, didn’t settle for the ban and began a massive protest. In the meantime, ACTAsia took immediate action and sent the Jiangmen authorities our report and recommendations on more effective and humane methods of rabies control, together with a letter signed by over fifty Chinese animal protection groups to oppose their plan.

Pressurised by the public and various organisations, both nationally and outside China, the authorities amended their policy. The ban on keeping dogs was lifted. Dogs could stay with their families, but were not allowed in public areas. Also, a dog keeping rule has been implemented to reduce the number of unwanted dogs and incidences of dog bites.

ACTAsia’s Mona Lung gave a presentation on ‘Why culling does not work’ at the 3rd China dog management symposium 2011

Mass vaccination instead of mass culling

We are encouraged by this development, but are still concerned that confiscation and killing of dogs could happen in public spaces. This could also encourage other areas in China to come up with draconian measures again, as rabies remains a problem in China. Experts agree that large-scale culling is not the solution, besides being extremely cruel to both dogs and their owners. Attention should be shifted towards mass vaccination of dogs and public education.

ACTAsia continues to work towards implementing humane control and stray animal management programmes, in collaboration with local authorities, veterinarians and animal welfare groups.

Please help us to promote humane alternatives to fight rabies and prevent further random and cruel dog culling!

Thank you for your support,

Pei F. Su

Mideast Nations Agree to Halt Slaughter of Australian Sheep

Just in time for the celebration of Eid-al-Adha, Australia and three of its main sheep markets—Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait—have come to an historic agreement. Sheep exported live to the Middle East will have to be killed in slaughter facilities that adhere to global animal welfare standards.

The agreement ends the practice of families buying sheep from holding pens, stuffing them into vehicle trunks and slaughtering them at home. Timing of the announcement is significant, coming just before the festival of sacrifice.

Eid-al-Adha commemorates Abraham’s obedience to Allah, who told him in a dream that he was to sacrifice his son, Ishmael. At the last minute, God took pity on Abraham and substituted a lamb. Centuries later, Muslims continue to commemorate Abraham’s act of obedience by slaughtering a sheep, goat or some other animal for Eid-al-Adha. They give away a third of the meat to the poor. Another third they share with family and friends. The remaining third they keep for their own use.

Home slaughter is still common, though in Abu Dhabi it is no longer legal. Officials warn of the risk of parasites and disease. They say unlicensed butchers do not sterilize their knives and may slaughter animals on the ground, where the meat can become contaminated. Elsewhere the practice of home slaughter is gradually losing favor, though it is still traditional.

So arriving at an agreement was likely easier for Australia than it would have been a decade ago. Although officially the change does not take place until 2012, timing of the anouncement, just before Eid-al-Adha begins November 6th, emphasizes the cultural shift.
